Admissions Policy

Parents who wish to enroll their child in St. Francis Xavier School, a Catholic school in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, will not be denied admission on the basis of race, color, or national origin. Every local effort will be made to provide each qualifying Catholic child the opportunity to attend St. Francis Xavier School regardless of the financial situation of the family. Families should seek the advice of their Pastor if a financial problem exists.

(Diocesan Policy No. 5110)
According to West Virginia law a child must be six years of age on or before September 1 of the year of enrollment to be eligible to enter first grade. Students who successfully completed Kindergarten in another system but who have not turned 6 by September 1 may still be enrolled. Exceptions to the age criteria may be made locally by the administration. This would be based upon testing, parent/teacher/principal conferences and observation of the child's social and academic performance. A formal request for such an exception must be made by the parent/guardian in writing.
Since religion classes are an integral part of the life of the school, students are expected to attend these classes. Only Catholic religion classes will be taught in Catholic school. Applicants should be willing to:

  • Understand and accept the philosophy, purposes and goals of Catholic education if they wish to be considered for admission.
  • Attend school liturgies.
  • Participate in service programs, which flow from the Religious Education program.

(Diocesan Policy No. 5512)
All children entering school for the first time shall have been immunized against diphtheria, polio, rubeola, rubella, tetanus, and whooping cough and shall be given a screening test to determine if they might have a vision or hearing impairment.

(Diocesan Policy No. 5111)
All students entering school for the first time and all students transferring from a school outside the State of West Virginia shall furnish a certificate from a licensed physician stating that a tuberculin skin test approved by the director of the department of health has been given within the first four months of the current school year.
"A principal or designee shall require that any person enrolling a pupil for the first time in any school in West Virginia present a copy of the pupil's original birth record certified by the State Registrar of Vital Statistics confirming the pupil's identity, age, and state file number of the original birth record." (WV Code 18-2-5c)

Students who attend St. Francis Xavier School and then withdraw to attend another local school may NOT return to St. Francis Xavier School at a later date. The Principal and the Pastor will confer for any possible exceptions to this policy.
Students are not accepted into the 8th grade unless the family has recently moved to the area. Possible exceptions will be decided by the Principal and the Pastor.
