Student Activities

Service Projects:

All students at St. Francis Xavier are involved in community service projects. Service projects can be classroom projects or school-wide projects. Some examples of service projects include the following: St. Jude Math-a-thon, Jump Rope for Heart, collecting items for the local animal shelter, collecting donations of money and items for various charities and causes, singing for local groups, service to the disabled, making cards for shut-ins, and many more.

School Service:

  • Patrol - Students in grades 6, 7, & 8 serve as Patrol to help younger students cross the street before and after school.
  • Altar Servers - boys in grades 4 - 8 can be trained to serve Mass.
  • Buddy classes - older grades are paired with younger grades to provide assistance and to share activities.
  • Cantors - students serve by leading the singing at Mass, prayer services, and assemblies.

Student Council:

Student Council - grades 4 - 8 serve on Student Council. They plan a variety of activities for the entire school. Grades 4, 5, & 6 elect one representative for the year. Grades 7 & 8 elect two representatives for the year.

Athletics:

A sports program is available for boys and girls in grades 5 - 8. St. Francis belongs to the Wheeling Parochial League and participates in sports with other Catholic schools. Students are under the guidance of the coaches and moderators of these activities. In accordance with West Virginia state law, any student who is absent for any portion of the academic day due to illness may not participate in any athletic activity that day. The participant must maintain at lease a C in all major classroom subjects (religion, reading/literature, vocabulary/spelling, English, math, social studies, and science). The conduct level must be Satisfactory or higher. Grades are checked on the 15th and 30th of every month to determine eligibility.

Boys' Basketball -Boys in grades 7 & 8 play Varsity Basketball.
-Boys in grades 5 & 6 play Reserve Basketball.
Girls' Basketball -Girls in grades 7 & 8 play Varsity Basketball.
-Girls in grades 5 & 6 play Reserve Basketball.
Cheerleading -Girls in grades 7 & 8 cheer as the Varsity Squad.
-Girls in grades 5 & 6 cheer as the Reserve Squad.
